Herbal Facial Steam

In the middle of all of life’s craziness, some days you just want to feel like a princess. Your stress level is a little high, your skin is dry and dull, and a little extra pampering never hurt anyone, right? Give your skin (and yourself) a little treat with a luxurious herbal facial steam.

The moist heat of a facial steam hydrates skin and loosens debris so pores can unclog, helping your complexion look its best. My favorite combination of herbs is calming, moisturizing, and soothing {and it smells amazing!}. Let’s take a look at the herbs I like to use and why:

  • Lavender flowers are not just a lovely smelling herb with calming properties. Lavender is also antimicrobial (fights bacteria as well as viruses), which is beneficial in preventing and healing problem skin.
  • Chamomile flowers offer soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Calendula is an astringent herb that promotes circulation and therefore nourishes the skin.
  • Peppermint or Eucalyptus (optional) – I typically only add a minty-type herb (in small quantity) when I’m feeling a bit congested, to give the steam a dual purpose to promote healthy skin and easy breathing. Be careful not to get too much of these herbs and keep your eyes closed to avoid discomfort.

Now for the fun part! Here’s how it’s done:

  • Boil 6-8 cups of water then remove from heat.
  • Mix hot water with herbs in a large bowl (1/3 cup each lavender, chamomile, calendula + 1 TBSP peppermint or eucalyptus {optional}).
  • Let stand, covered, for 5-10 minutes.
  • Wash your face as usual, but wait to apply any other lotions/creams.
  • Secure your hair away from your face.
  • Place your face over the bowl (6-12 inches from water) and make a “steam tent” by draping a large towel over your head, shoulders, and the bowl. {PLEASE: make sure the steam is no longer so hot that you will burn yourself BEFORE you put your face over it!}.
  • Breathe deeply and enjoy until the water has cooled (5-15 minutes).
  • Add hot water as desired to refresh the steam.
  • When finished, splash your face with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Enjoy your happy, radiant skin. If you give it a try, let me know what you think in the comments below!
